High temperature generation with cubic anvil apparatus

Utsumi, Wataru

Koatsuryoku No Kagaku To Gijutsu, 14(4), p.346 - 352, 2004/11

The experimental technique of high temperature generation with cubic anvil high pressure apparatus is summarized. Many efforts have been made to develop the proper cell assembly for high temperature generation, and each laboratory has its own technical know-how. In this article, we open our standard cell assemblies for in situ X-ray diffraction and single crystal growth. Stable high temperature generation higher than 2400-730$$^{circ}$$C at 6.5 GPa has been achieved owing to the use of insulation sleeve placed in a pyrophyllite pressure medium.

In order to clarify the mechanism of diamond formation in the Earth's mantle, we studied the diamond formation in the H$$_{2}$$O-fluid by in situ X-ray observation with the simple C-H$$_{2}$$O-MgO system. The results suggest that the solubility of MgO component increases greatly as a function of pressure. However, the generation of fluid is not a sufficient condition for diamond formation, because the carbon quantity in fluid is not increased drastically until just before the diamond formation temperature. This is the first report of the kinetics study in fluid using synchrotron radiation.
